@BloodPhilia 4. If I make the sshd listen to a non-standard port on a server, e.g. 1234, then what is the way of connecting to this server from a linux command line on a client? I mean, does a standard ssh command need some sort of a switch?

@BloodPhilia Thanks a whole lot for such a detailed and accessible answer! A couple further questions on your points: 1. What is the advantage of jailing users to just restricting permissions? Say, logging in as a 'user' I only have read access to things outside my /home, but no write or execute access [as per Ubuntu default, I suppose]. Is it better/worse than jailing? 2. Where are the authentication logs normally located? I'd like to be able to examine them manually/via grep once in a while.
