comment Firefox 30 not recognizing font
What type is the font? (Like Microsoft OpenType, Apple Advanced Technology, OpenType PostScript, TrueType)? Does it work with another font of the same type? And given bbLean, am I right to assume this is Windows? Which Windows? (And as an aside: Firefox is written with just one uppercase F.)

Very well, @Tyson, then I think that IT guy was wrong... I'd never call unrestricted WiFi access (once authenticated) "closed" or "walled". (But I might be wrong too.)

@Tyson, why do you think the OP wants something "that controls the information and Web sites the user is able to access"?

@Tyson, I don't think it's called "Walled Garden". I'd search for things like "WPA Enterprise".

comment Accidental Windows to Linux Overwrite
Well, @Prasanna, your choice could be to not let people pollute Super User with questions that lack detail. But that's up to you. (And again, it's very nice that you want to help. But since you wrote "Even I'm a new user", I just don't think this is what Stack Exchange sites are about.) If the two of you find a solution, please post that as an answer here.

@Prasanna, nice (very nice) you're willing to go to great lengths to help. But note that Stack Exchange sites (including Super User) were never meant to be some personal help forums. All questions should ideally also have some value for future visitors who have the same problem. Solving the problem through Skype or email is not helping trying to achieve that? Also, other answerers might miss details that you've shared among the two of you, and waste their time trying to help.

"since you still have a pretty clean install" -- er, it's Windows Vista. I doubt that's a fresh install? Re-installing relies on being very sure the backup is okay. (Though trying to save the data on disk will be very hard, I agree.)

Without more detail about which Linux distribution, the version and all, I guess people can only guess what happened.

Do you remember seeing a warning after selecting that "Use entire disk"? (If not, then I still assume Linux has only claimed the free space of the entire disk. (But I might be wrong...) On the other hand: this being Vista, it's likely not a very large harddisk?)

Not a batch file, but maybe it helps: addictivetips.com/windows-tips/…, which uses C:\Windows\explorer.exe shell:::{3080F90D-D7AD-11D9-BD98-0000947B0257}

Another aside, in case you didn't know: hitting Win+D from the Windows 8 tiles also shows the desktop. So maybe searching for emulating that helps, if no answers are posted here.

Can you try start "" "C:\Windows\explorer.exe", as suggested here?

"when I log on, it boots to desktop but then it starts file explorer too" -- what did you do for that? Simply run explorer.exe? (As an aside: upgrading to Windows 8.1, if possible, also gets you the new Internet Explorer, and maybe other Microsoft updates. I didn't know it could boot into the desktop though.)
