comment How do I PROPERLY map a keyboard key to a mouse button?
Ok, after about 5 minutes of research, I retract point #2. I apparently have to add + Mod4 in my xbindkeys config to account for the super key being held down. The workaround you suggest is better than mine, and I'm switching to it :-) But it still doesn't answer the question.

A couple of problems with that: #1 This is still just another hack/workaround, and doesn't answer the question. #2 xbindkeys doesn't work while the super key is being held down. It's as if xbindkeys is paused, and doesn't register anything, until the super key is released.

comment How do I PROPERLY map a keyboard key to a mouse button?
@totti: With xmodmap I can map keys to other keys, and with the XKB extension for X (and xkbset) I can map mouse buttons to keyboard keys, but I'm trying to map a keyboard key to a mouse button. I still haven't found a way to do that.

@totti: The arch wiki xmodmap page describes how to map keys to other keys, how to swap modifier keys and how to reverse scrolling, but it doesn't mention mapping keyboard keys to mouse buttons

+1 Awesome answer, and I think it actually solves my problem, but unfortunately it doesn't answer the question so I can't accept it in good conscience.

I guess it's technically called a key, not a button

I can configure Awesome to open specific windows at specific positions with specific sizes, but I was looking for a solution that can apply to already opened windows, rather than a semi-permanent configuration change. Also it would be a bonus if the answer wasn't specific to the window manager.
