comment Periodic “mirroring” of boot disk in Windows 7
actually, a raid-1 one would NOT need its failed drive replaced before it became operational. it can run just fine with only one drive remaining - that's the whole point of R1. otherwise implementing R1 would increase the risk of filesystem failure rather than reduce it. you asked about mirroring, and RAID-1 is the answer. on a unix or linux box, you could make do with rsyncing (or cp or even tar cf - | tar xf -) all the files to another drive, but windows just won't boot when you mirror at the file level like that....it's persnickety about where exactly on the disk its system files are.

comment Is an EULA enforceable?
@troggy: if you buy a CD or a DVD, you get to use it. the manufacturer doesn't get to say "you can only use this CD/DVD in our brand of player" (IANAL, but IMO attempting to do that constitutes an illegal monopoly). copyright does not allow that kind of control by the copyright owner - copyright controls copying and distribution of copies.

comment How to virtualize OSX on Linux
@TFM: even if the OP lives in a jurisdiction where Apple's EULA is enforcable, breaking the terms of the EULA is NOT a crime. at worst, it is a breach of a civil contract - a matter dealt with by civil courts, not criminal courts.

one more thing - with a nice machine like that, it's worthwhile using linux w/ KVM as the host OS, then you can run Solaris or Freebsd or whatever as guests. without spending a cent on vmware.

another thing you can do to control heat and power usage is (if using linux) to use the cpufreq tools. set up the system to use the "ondemand" governer. that sets the CPU freq on each core to it's slowest setting until there's significant demand, then it bumps up the frequency as needed.

comment How to protect the keyboard from your cat
note: this probably won't stop them interrupting your concentration. cats have claws, and you have legs. my cats figured out long ago that standing up on their back legs and "accidentally" digging their claws into my leg will get my attention if i have been rudely ignoring them for too long.
