comment What alternatives to Excel exist for data capture?
Excel does work but the question is about what equivalents exist so that I can understand what's out there. Ideally saving those 1-2 programmers if there's something with better out-of-the-box functionality.

Thank you, I was totally unaware of this feature. A quick read of the man pages suggests that logging continues until a low-disk-space condition is reached - hence perhaps a need for a logrotate script.
