comment What is the downside to Windows XP style DPI scaling in Windows 7
One huge problem with downsizing your resolution on a non-CRT screen is that then the logical pixels don't match the physical pixels and you end up with the OS trying to display something that is, for example, 5 x 3 pixels in a 6 x 4 physical pixels and you get awful pixelization. And the OS doesn't do a nice job of rendering that.

comment How can I reinstall Windows 7 (w/ install DVD) with minimal (or hopeful no) impact on installed programs?
@Ramhound Please do post that as an Answer and I'll accept (unless a better answer comes along, which I doubt) So, as long as I don't have corrupt files in C:\Windows\winsxs\ directory I can try the Repair option?

@Dan, I used the Samsung Magician SSD software to check the SSD and it says it was in good or excellent condition. Found only 88K in bad sectors. How would I know if it truly was going bad? BTW, I have not gotten NEW chkdsk errors in the last few days.

comment How much does having Indexing running on my Samsung SSD affect health vs. search speed?
@Ramhound , so, if I could store the index on a regular HDD then that would not shorten the lifespan, right? (not sure if that's possible.

@Ramhound, I see. So, it's the constant writing to update the index that is causing the shortened life span.

If you include the link I posted in my answer, below, I'll mark your answer as THE answer. GREAT tip for using the SSD-specific tool. I'd bold that.

comment Replace corrupt system file from windows 7 recovery console
Yep, did that. It at least ran and finished, but SFC was not able to replace some files. Not sure where to get them and they are all in AMD directories and I am on an Intel processor so hoping I don't need those :)

When I run the WRE it shows my Windows directory is on E: (although it was on C: when booting up normally)> is this typical? And should I use c: or e: in your example?

comment How do I force a Windows 8.1 Tablet to boot from a USB stick?
I did figure out how to get to the basic BIOS but USB isn't listed in the Boot order and I can't see a way to add it. : You can access the "basic" bios by holding volume down while pressing the power button when the tablet is off (not sleep, but actually shut down).. Hold the volume down until the bios screen appears..

comment Two mice, one left handed and another right handed. At the same time
I just got it working with two Marble Mouse Tracbkballs. It was a little tricky getting the Scrolling to work right. I had to (with each Trackball) go into the Settings (wrench icon) > Mouse Control Panel and adjust things in the driver control panel. When you launch that control panel EitherMouse will show a msg "LEFT [or right] mouse detected" allowing you to set control panel setting for THAT mouse.

This wont' work on an older Windows XP machine without the SP to support msi installs. (And yes, I run into people with older machines all the time).

comment How do I drill down and find out which System processes are generating lots (10Mb/s) of network traffic?
I figured it out the old fashioned way: I just kept deleting processes till the traffic dropped. Turned out to be my TrueImage backup. The backup was finished but with errors. I suspect (still need to test) that it was still (very actively) trying to continue the backup.

comment How do I drill down and find out which System processes are generating lots (10Mb/s) of network traffic?
@Lawrence, I ran Wireshark but I can't see how to tell what process (or sub? system process) is generating the traffic, it just shows a to and from address (i see the IP and the device (AsusteckC_60, Cisco-LI...) but I don't know enough about WireShark to know which application is generating that. Any suggestions?

comment Is there any way to drill down and see what System process is producing network traffic on my LAN?
How can relate the address to a process (my goal being to find the offending process and perhaps disable it) relate the Address from/to (like Dell_74:51:ef and AsustekC_60:f7:83. (this conversation is 90% of the traffic, about 9 Mb/s.

Thanks for the tip on Stats mode. Wireshark was a bit ...overwhelming without that.
