I started a shinkwrap software company ("Micro ISV") in 1995. It's been my full-time job for over 10 years now.

comment How do I drill down and find out which System processes are generating lots (10Mb/s) of network traffic?
I figured it out the old fashioned way: I just kept deleting processes till the traffic dropped. Turned out to be my TrueImage backup. The backup was finished but with errors. I suspect (still need to test) that it was still (very actively) trying to continue the backup.

@Lawrence, I ran Wireshark but I can't see how to tell what process (or sub? system process) is generating the traffic, it just shows a to and from address (i see the IP and the device (AsusteckC_60, Cisco-LI...) but I don't know enough about WireShark to know which application is generating that. Any suggestions?

comment Is there any way to drill down and see what System process is producing network traffic on my LAN?
How can relate the address to a process (my goal being to find the offending process and perhaps disable it) relate the Address from/to (like Dell_74:51:ef and AsustekC_60:f7:83. (this conversation is 90% of the traffic, about 9 Mb/s.

Thanks for the tip on Stats mode. Wireshark was a bit ...overwhelming without that.

I think you misunderstood his question. He was asking about the "count down timer" delay.

comment Why can't I set Windows 7 folder to Writeable?
Tried that and now I get a warning "Do you want to copy this file without encryption"? (neither source nor destination is encrypted).I was then able to copy it from the Source to the destination drive.

What if you have 2 PCIe slots OR if the video card is a PCI card?

comment Is there a benefit to getting Windows 8 PRO vs. HOME when using VMWARE virtualization?
@all I currently use (and have a lot of VHDs for) Vmware, so I'm planning to stick with that if possible. Does Hyper-V (free version) allow you to CREATE aditional VM's or do I need to buy something from MS for that?

comment Should I use my 128GB SSD drive for my Windows primary or a use a 6GB/s SATA drive)?
@Sammy, I should have said "boot" not "primary". When I select options on Dell's website, the SSD is not listed as one of the Boot drive options, on an option from the Secondary. I talked to a CSR from Dell. He said they do not offer the SSD for the Boot drive.

I just don't want to have to reinstall Windows on the SSD (if it comes preinstalled on the other drive).

comment What are the most common metrics for comparing performance when buying a new Windows PC?
I'm looking more for a PERFORMANCE metric, and ideally for the whole system. Something like "Writing a large block of data to a drive", etc.

comment Can you tell what types of card slots are in a PC without opening up the case and physically eyeballing it?
Can't see how to download the Free version without installing some "downloader" (and there's not guarantee the downloader will actually download the program). Too spammy for me. (I know, I want free AND not spammy).)

comment Is there an easy way to automatically remove (or move) unused desktop icons (shorcuts) in Windows 7/8?
To clarify: On Win 7 Pro: the error with CleanDesktop is : when you actually choose "clean to folder" I get an Unhanded exception. I'm running it as administrator. Also, there's no option to sort by last-accessed date do you have to choose each shortcut, that's really not a solution non techies (my users) can use.

yes I am an administrator and I checked "Apply...automatically". This is Win 7/32bit. I tried it again. It still hasn't removed shortcuts that I haven't clicked in over a year. Have you had it actually work for you? (This wouldn't be the first Windows feature that simply doesn't work).

Hmmm... I tried that but it didn't work. Windows 7 said "probelm not present" but then it lists 2 shorcuts unused in last 3 months. These are the results There are icons on the desktop that haven't been used in 3 months. Unused desktop shortcuts List of shortcuts that have not been recently accessed for 3 months. Shortcut name: c:\users\clay\desktop\smart photo editor.lnk c:\users\clay\desktop\syncback.exe.lnk
