comment Accidentally deleted files from /boot
@user3109672: Just dowload one :-). The installation CDs of most Linux distributions also work as rescue CDs - ideally use the CD you installed from (or re-download it). Failing that, use any modern Linux rescue CD, for example Knoppix.

comment Do text files store their encoding method for later decoding?
@OldGeezer: And BTW, file cannot do reliably detect most text encodings (because that is very difficult). The man page has some information on character set detection - file mostly only recognizes ASCII, UTF-8/16, EBCDIC, and ISO-8859-x. For example, a file encoded in KOI8-R is reported as "ISO-8859-1".

comment Do text files store their encoding method for later decoding?
@OldGeezer: file has various heuristics for determining file type and encoding. Mostly, it looks for certains strings or byte sequences in the file. If you want more specific information, you'll probably have to read the source. Or just ask a separate question :-).

comment How does a server get notified about the HTTP request?
@DhiwakarRavikumar: Yes, ports are just numbers. They are made up by a program or the operating system, they do not correspond to anything in hardware.

comment How to find out if a CPU has an MMU
@PaulA.Clayton: True. However, AFAIK, all common modern OSes use the MMU to implement memory protection, so these OSes do need an MMU for memory protection. Anyway, thanks for the information; I edited my answer to clarify.

comment How do I measure or track the progress of a command on a GNU distro?
At any rate, OP already uses rsync --progress for seeing progress during a copy operation.

comment Can I run MS-Word/Excel when I don't have an internet connection?
Have you tried completely deactivating your network connection? If the network interface is active, but there is no connection, the computer might hang while waiting for an answer that will never come. Try deactivating the network connection under "Network connections" in the Windows configuration.
