comment Best way to get data off a computer with no support for USB or Ethernet?
@kloucks: why can't you? Some of the leanest but complete Linux distros could fit all of their files in a 64 MB thumbdrives. The latest Linux 2.6 kernel (without initramfs and only relevant drivers included) is about 2.5 MB, which can be made much smaller with some effort. You probably are not going to have all the Compiz jazz, but some minimalists wm, e.g. twm could fit and have lots of space left; Firefox is out of the question, but dillo or even links is fine. The extreme minimalist Linux distribution can fit a whole system in 2.5MB.

comment Moving layers by half pixel (GIMP)
Nice. The result after linear interpolation is a slightly blurry, but the Sharpen filter fixed that up.

comment ulimit not limiting memory usage
@Gilles: I've tried putting additional constrains on "max memory size", "virtual memory", "core file size", "data seg size", basically everything I can see in ulimit that is related to memory (I don't use much files). The problem with collecting from /proc/ is that my computer locks up in 2-3 seconds after the runaway started, and I have to struggle really hard to be able to kill the offending process (many times, I'd just use the power button). I'll try acquire one though.

comment ulimit not limiting memory usage
I'm using gentoo and my program didn't spawn any subprocesses, but it uses SDL and OpenGL, could that be the cause? Setting ulimit to an extremely low value do cause ls, etc and my program to get killed. The program requires between 4000-8000 on normal use (at 4000 the SDL library doesn't get loaded, and at 8000 the program doesn't get killed even though top showed that it ate more than half a gigabytes of RAM)

comment Determining if Linux partition is ext2 or ext3 without /etc/fstab info
All ext filesystem can be thought of as a single filesystem format, and the extN denotes the filesystem's driver version, instead of the filesystem format. The fact that later version of the ext filesystem driver have features that previous versions cannot use is due to the extensible nature of the ext format.
