comment Is there a program that will quickly find recently created files
The link is effectively broken now; it redirects to a generic "Windows XP downloads" page.

comment Is it possible to set wget to show the transfer times in milliseconds?
This is not suited for short transfers where establishing the connection may take much longer than the actual transfer.

comment How do I use regular expressions in TextMate's find dialog box to search and replace?
TextMate uses the Oniguruma regular expression library. Section 20.3 of the manual has information on the flavour of regular expressions TextMate is using and apparently there are some options in the user interface of TextMate to affect some behaviours of regular expression matching (Ruby, Perl, Java and Oniguruma style).

comment How do I use regular expressions in TextMate's find dialog box to search and replace?
Should the output be four of "\caption{}" or only one? Should the numbers (1, 2, 3, 4) be extracted and put in the output?

comment Unicode grep for Windows
Did you find one that worked with Unicode? It is not at all clear in the answers if the different tools are Unicode-aware or not.

@grawity: yes, you are right. It was not well thought out (probably a mixup of two different stages).

comment What is file descriptor 10?
@Paul: it may have been an arbitrary convention that was used, but given it was used for executing a command on each of a number of nodes in a Linux cluster, couldn't it have something to do with that (network pipes?). Anyway, I will try to find the two scripts.

comment How do I find out what version of Linux I'm running?
+1. For similar systems, like MinGW, the "-a" is required to get the version information, for example, "MINGW32_NT-5.1 LAP065 1.0.17(0.48/3/2) 2011-04-24 23:39 i686 Msys".

comment Which regular expression standard is used in grep?
This is about Linux, but the "-P" option is not available under MinGW ("grep: Support for the -P option is not compiled into this --disable-perl-regexp binary"), at least not by default.

comment Better way to detect EOL of a file
'file' is not a reliable way, at least not without extra parameters for 'file'. On an XML file, it will only output "XML document text", no matter the EOL character sequence (observed on MinGW 1.0.17, 2011-05-30). (I ran into this problem at work.)
