comment Can't turn on Microsoft update in Windows 7 x86
@Jack "Windows Update" is just the OS and is the default for Windows. "Microsoft Updates" is the OS and Microsoft applications and has to be explicitly enabled.

@Jack Definitely not enabling MS updates. However Windows updates work fine.

This doesn't address my issue. I am trying to enable Microsoft Updates, not change how updates are delivered to me.

comment VirtualBox Virtio install fails for windows 7 SP1
Yep I failed at reading comprehension today. I had looked at some of that information and discounted it because I couldn't get my head around downloading a windows driver from a linux distro for an Oracle product (that and being tired and rushed)

I think by "Cloud" he means server based solution. "Cloud" is the way the hip new kids speak these days. Back in my day we didn't have clouds .. But I did have a onion tied to my belt which was the style back then

comment Shortcuts to exe on network pc ok?
@wayne - I read through the answers and comments and it looks to me that your application is a useful business related custom calculator that is only used by internal users. As such I think it may be better delivered as a small Asp.net web app rather than an explicit program - especially as you said users are not allowed to install new programs

comment Debugging Windows 7 FTP woes
nhinkle - I am in no position to verify whose implementation of FTP is correct. And the manufacturers viewpoint is that their software isn't supported on Win 7 64 bit, so they are not going to look. My opinion is that someone is not correctly supporting the RFC and it shouldn't matter if the target is a Win 7 system

I'm using the Windows FTP stack. I haven't tried any other FTP servers and as per my edit I won't need to.

Well I can't see how the changes to the host system affect the vm's, but I'll give it to anyway for problem #2. Looks like its a restore from backups for me!

comment Choice and setup of version control
Grant - Yes I understand that commit is a repo wide action in SVN in terms of bumping the version number. I asked a more specific question on SO stackoverflow.com/questions/2921305/… and the answer seems to be that in svn branches (but not commits) are not repo wide actions but in a DVCS branches and commits are a repo wide action. Thus a DVCS would only suit me if I pitched repos at the module level. So I still meed to think long and hard about project organisation

Grant, are you sure you can't branch a subversion repository at a sub-directory level. The red book svnbook.red-bean.com/en/1.1/ch04s02.html seems to suggest that you can.

comment How to activate Windows XP from Windows 7 compatibility mode on MacOS Parallels 5
Personally I would be leery of trying to run what amounts to a virtual machine inside a virtual machine. And while it is not a solution to your problem, you can still buy XP. If all you need is XP on your box, that would be a better way to go.
