Inquisitive developer, programming teacher, avid reader, music lover, gamer; INTP; father.

  • web development veteran -- PHP, JS, CSS, the works
  • several years of C#/WPF/MVVM experience
  • used to fire a lot of C++ but not in anger for quite some time
  • know Windows Forms, WCF, ASP.NET MVC
  • lightly poked Python and Ruby

PHP is probably the ugliest language I 've ever used. So why do I love it?

comment Program or website to show multiple symmetric cryptography algorithm output?
@mpy: I 'm not sure if that would really be an improvement. "How to identify" is not hard to answer: encrypt with 30 common algos and see if you recognize the output. In essence I would still be asking for the same thing: a shortcut that doesn't require me to write a throwaway program that does this. Don't you agree?

comment Why is hibernation still used?
@leftaroundabout: Oh my, how much does the MS-bashing add to this conversation! Does the XFCE fairy also save internal program state? Because if it doesn't then it can't restore anything remotely resembling the computer's state before shutting down. "A" working session != the previous working session.

comment Can I set up arbitrary filesystem redirection in Windows?
@rob: Not really, which is why I am OK with something "close enough". Although to be frank by now I have turned towards other types of solution to my original problem.

Unfortunately that's not what I am looking for, what I want to mount is not a partition but a directory.

I have not used fsutil hardlink in the past, but AFAIK hardlinks are only possible on files, not directories (the closest equivalent for directories being reparse points, mklink /j).

comment Can I set up arbitrary filesystem redirection in Windows?
@rob: I would be fine with none of them being visible. My aim is to arrange for a suite of programs to look in Q:\somedir (which is possible but tedious) and allow the user to easily configure what the programs really look at by redirecting Q:\somedir (which will hopefully be much easier). I would prefer to redirect through something like Q:\{insert-guid-here} so that I have a very good chance of not stepping on any existing filesystem's toes.

I 've been reading Wikipedia on MBR, and it now looks like you are correct and I was under the wrong impression. But I 'd certainly like to get a more authoritative answer.

As far as I can tell detail disk doesn't do that either. It just tells you if that disk is the one you booted from.
