If you are having trouble connecting, you may need to pass -e ssh to tell rsync to connect over ssh.

rsync -avvP is my favourite for files and/or folders, but there is one drawback: it needs to be installed on the remote machine.

I recommend adding the -p option when copying files or folders with scp. It copies over the file attributes too (timestamps and flags). I find I want -p more often than I don't want it!

Edited to include @intuited's suggestions, also appended to the statusline rather than overwrite it.

It's a bit clearer if we re-assign the variable rather than set the option

append to rather than replace status line, escaped spaces, added the missing parenthesis, used the +1 -1 trick for accurate reading, as per documentation

comment How can I detect long-lived connections and mark them for shaping
I wish I could agree with you, but if I combine the longevity with the total number of bytes transferred over that connection, then I know the rate and I can distinguish long-lived downloads from short-lived HTTP requests and long-lived SSH sessions. My final solution uses a modified version of jnettop and has worked well enough for me for the past 9 months, but I'm afraid I did not get around to publishing it yet!

Removed rnano from the main solution, now discussing it later.

Hardened the original solution, rather than leaving it weak with a disclaimer

Documented a much better solution to file edit rights: using groups!

Gosh, had to add another disclaimer just to be safe.

Not wanting to say "never" without proof, I tried yet another approach. It too ended in disappointment.
