i ended up using the trial of this app and then buying it. It was a little buggy at first, but then the author released a new version in April 2011 and now I love it. it's perfect and totally worth the 5 bucks. :)

comment text editor that allows selection of text block, then adds a character at the front of line?
you should go through the vim tutorial. it's in the vim folder in your programs menu. Vim and Emacs are entirely new ways of thinking about editing text. And regex ... is not for the faint-hearted.

make sure you check out jokosher before you go downloading audacity. I've setup two musicians with audacity and it was indeed a pain. Jokosher looks good from the website and screenshots, but i've never seen it in action.

Audacity out of the box doesn't really have a lot that a musician can use, but there are a lot of free add-ons for it that extend its capability. You have to find your own sound clips, though, and that can be tough. Also the UI is more linux-like than apple-like. Lots of power, but you gotta poke around and figure it out.
