comment Style of merged cells when First column option is checked in a Word table
That doesn't work either. Word won't let you collapse a cell to zero width. At least there would space for border remain.

@aganju Technically, yes. However, the text in my example inherits the first-column style, and as such making it non-bold in fact makes the text itself bold. This behavior manifests itself whenever you copy & paste the text to some place elsewhere.

This is a workaround, but not an answer to my question.

This question is about Word, and not a cheap way of earning a bounty based on an Excel-related answer.

comment Any way to set a default view in Word 2007 or 2010 and keep among restarts?
@jpmc26 That's an annoying one, too. No attention to detail is the norm, unfortunatelly.

comment Enabling extra spacing at the top of page for a given style
@LanceLeonard A spacer style is what I considered. However, it's a bit annoying. Currently I stick with section breaks, although it has similar disadvantages as the spacer style. Making a bigger top margin is not a usable solution. IMHO having level 1 headings with a space above is a very frequent typographical requirement, so I'm looking for a native solution without workarounds.

@DavidPostill The issue is such formatting won't work. Word just ignores 'spacing before' in that case.
