comment How do I get Java applets to work on Mac OS X Mavericks?
Okay. I get java version "1.6.0_65". Not the latest version on Java's website, but I'm not sure if it's the latest provided by Apple.

Thanks, for the extra detail. Unfortunately, this is not what I see in my preferences window. There's no Java option at all.

Thanks for the answer, but I don't have a Java control panel in my system preferences. I also don't get any results when I search for Java in the search box. Java was installed by OS X when I tried to run a Java application.

@martineau Thanks, but Java is already installed on my actual system. I already have Java applications running on my computer, but the Java plugin isn't loading on any web browser (I tried Safari, Firefox, and Chrome).

comment How can I tell the transfer rate of each computer on my network?
Unfortunately, I don't have a computer that I can dedicate to monitoring the network traffic. In fact, none of my computers even meet the requirements (two ethernet ports).

@davidgo Thanks, but most of the devices are wireless, so there's no way to determine which the LED is blinking for.

@Usta Thanks, I'll look into it. I'm not sure if this will be possible, but if I'm able to do this, I'll give it a try.

comment Why doesn't the silverlight plugin quit after I close a Netflix tab in my browser?
@MarkLopez In fact, I do use gfx. However, when my computer is connected to an external monitor, it switches to the dedicated card regardless of what's running or what I want. When I disconnect it, it should switch back to integrated, except it doesn't when Silverlight stays running. You're absolutely right about Mac's graphics card decision-making being part of the problem, but I think it's also reasonable to expect Silverlight to quit when I close a Netflix tab.

@MarkLopez You're absolutely right, but it's not my choice when my computer decides it needs the dedicated card. I understand that Silverlight doesn't use any GPU when it doesn't need to, but my computer decides that while Silverlight is running, the dedicated card needs to be on, even if it's not doing anything. It's stupid, but that's just how it works.

comment Linux: set up media server to stream video via the Internet?
@Atari911 I've actually been using Plex for a while now. It's hands down the best solution I've found.

comment Is there a program that would make it easier to look at how network protocols work?
But can I make requests with Wireshark? I used it before, and it seemed to be only for viewing the traffic that's already there, not initiating requests myself. Can this be done in Wireshark?

Thanks for the answer. Unfortunately, I needed the app to work for both Windows and Mac, but iSpy does look good.

comment How can I stream recorded video from an IP camera?
I can do that, but I want to record the video, since I'm not going to be constantly looking at the stream. I want to view the already recorded video through the internet.

I hate to tell you this, but I think that might be as far as you can get. Even identical monitors will have noticeable differences in color temperature.

I remember seeing mine as connected via USB. But this was a long time ago, so this might have changed.

Well, it is possible to block only on certain computers, as far as I know. But the answer you just got also looks promising.

Take a look at OpenDNS. It does what you're looking for. It requires your router to support it, but there's a chance your router already does (for example all Netgear wireless N routers do).
