Female Linux user, been 'playing' with computers for a long while.

I'm quite sure I don't know everything, and I'm always trying to discover more.

Decent programmer in several languages, can decipher most anything. A background in electronics, repair and nuclear engineering. (Honest!)

I enjoy reading, discovering new things, music and my computers.
(and long walks on the beach, large dogs and chocolate... yeah yeah)

Warped, offbeat sense of humor, been told I have "The Knack", learned it's not fatal though, whew!

For the most part... "I make things work.™"

I really hate telling someone "NO, you can't do that", so I often find some offbeat method to accomplish things. Nothing is really impossible, just some things are more difficult to do than others. It's those 'difficult' things I enjoy. The Challenge!

{Chuckle} Ok, so I'm easily amused, but I do find it interesting with the 'badges'. Well done, it's like those nasty farm games on those toy sites, but more entertaining because I learn while earning them. Yaay!

comment What causes my USB harddrive to stop working after unmounting?
I'd have to guess it's something to do with how the ioctl handles those commands. Think of the same commands on a tape drive (where they likely originated), or today's cd/dvd drive... umount simply un-attaches it, ready for more use later, while eject pops the tray, ready to be removed entirely. so eject doesn't expect something there until there's new info on an insertion of (tape spindle), cd tray closing, usb insertion... But that's an educated guess.

I was pleased to see you cut-n-paste to put it here, as I was able to tinker with it. Seeing the raw text file would be more helpful. Since it seems to be a mixture of regular ASCII (or UTF-8) and wide-chars, i imagine a 'filter' could be ginned up to fix it.

revised find files where group permissions equal user permissions
Realized first version wouldn't handle filenames with spaces.

parameter. Don't feel bad, it was one of those chance discoveries for me too. There's a web page (app?) on the Debian site which shows the same information, which I suppose was first, and someone coded it for apt-cache. Quite handy.

comment Windows 7 takes 4 minutes to mount a USB mass storage device
Windows 7 is nosy too, it scans all the files on the drive to see what options to present you on it's little pop-up menu... pictures, music, programs. "Show me my files Dangit!!" is the option I always want... knock it off!

comment PC is limited to 1 USB to IEEE-1284 Parallel Printer cable
Windows uses the serial numbers to 'tag' each device. Many (cheaper) vendors put a static serial number in place instead of unique values. Obtaining another brand usb-1284 cable should help. (Should)

comment iso9660 filesystem when remade with a slight change blows its size by 100M
The original ISO9660 image may have been written in a "transparent compression" mode, which compresses the data being written. This could explain your ~100M difference. See the -z flag in the mkisofs man page, also the mkztree man page. Also, the -U flag is not recommended, as it breaks many standards. Your resultant CD may not be readable on all systems.
