comment Use tar and gz to create archive in Ubuntu Terminal
if you add the -z flag to the tar command it will tell it to use gzip compression (e.g. tar -czf tarball.tar.gz abc tt zz), -j will use bzip2 (e.g. tar -cjf tarball.tar.bz2 abc tt zz). The way that tar handles it's output is the same whether or not compression is used. Without the -f it goes to stdout.

comment Git installation: /usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lz
I'm unable to find the -lz option on either a GNU based Linux box or a BSD based OS X system. It sounds like there may be a bug in the package you're trying to install. What platform are you attempting to install git-daemon on?

comment Apache won't start on Mac OS X Lion/MAMP
Not 100% sure, so I'm not posting this as an answer, but you probably are not starting Apache as root and you need to have root privileges (at least initially) in order to listen on port 80. I found this forum post forum.mamp.info/viewtopic.php?t=372 which seems to corroborate my theory but I have not tested it out so YMMV.

comment What is the right gauge wire for the incoming DSL phone line to my router?
The reason I suspect that it may be water is because of the phrase "degrade over time". To me this sounds like some sort of corrosion that is happening due to my assumption that when you fix the connectors it's working fine for a while and then starts to degrade. To me, cable of the incorrect size would be immediately apparent rather than a degradation over time. I know that DSL doesn't care about twists per foot, I was just stating that the gauge of wire was the same regardless of cable spec.
