comment Strange behaviour of my computer. Maybe some defect hardware?
Tried with only one of the memory modules in at a time? If the board has onboard graphics, I'd also pull the card. Basically reduce it to the minimum number of components needed to work and try your memory testing from there. Also worth trying a firmware update, but you'd want the system to be stable before doing that.

comment What's the function of the Alt Gr key?
Does on every keyboard I've used. Maybe it's a UK-keymap thing.

comment Common reasons not to use OpenOffice
I'd suspect these days casual office-suite users are going for Google Docs rather than OpenOffice.org. No download and your docs available in the cloud is a big bonus where you don't need the full MS Office experience.

More like £70 for the Home and Student version, £300 is more around your Standard/pro versions. Still, £70 more than it's worth to type up and view the odd document at home.

If I'm reading this right, you have the old drive as a 2nd physical drive in the new box, yes? If so, I can't imagine anything easier than copy and paste if we are just talking about docs, photos, muisc, vids etc.

What is your PC slow at doing, anything or specific activities such as, say, looking at Flash videos/apps or some such like?

Before doing the benchmark, worth checking your CPU load whilst supposedly idle.

I'd agree with Rabarberski there, and recommend Sophos' emergency copy of SAV32CLI (sophos.com/support/disinfection/trojan.html). Free, just download the scanning engine plus latest IDEs, extract all and burn to CD, from which you boot.

comment Building a computer for the first time from scratch - will this really work?
Unless you have need of full ATX for the extra PCIe slots or particular features of that board, I'd be more tempted to go for a microATX motherboard eg the "Asus - Socket 775 - uATX Intel G31 (P5KPL-AM/PS)" listed on that site. Also given that it's a test machine, I'd go for the E5300 CPU as it is substantially cheaper whilst still being a very capable processor, and ideal for experimenting with overclocking.

comment Low CPU Usage, But the CPU Light is Blinking
Indeed. If it (assuming it is the HDD activity light) was on solid, then I'd say it was busy, but if it's blinking/flickering, that's normal.

comment How can you control the speed of fan that comes with the Antec Sonata III case from the outside?
Aye, I've a couple of Antec cases with their 3-speed fans, and it does seem a missed trick not to have them wired to a panel on either the front or back. Not much of an issue for me as I don't OC and low-speed is fine, but for mid-range enthusiast cases, it seems an obvious omission.
