You didn't mention that there was no internet access. I don't suppose you could connect an external dial-up modem. is there any ISP in your locale that still offers dial-up internet access?

Added answer with generic usb mass storage driver. see if it works. Also check manufacturer website for old win98 drivers.

What if within Firefox's Privacy Settings, you accept site cookies but no 3rd party cookies - would that solve the issue?
