comment External HDD is causing my second drive to unallocate (disappear)
Just to clarify, none of this has anything to do with the external HDD. If there is any bad sector it will be in the HDDs that make up your D drive. Were you able to see their SMART data with the software?

Bad sectors are physical damages on a disk (not logical and not related to RAID). Once they start to appear they will spread and the disk will eventually fail. The only solution is to replace the disk while the data can still be read out. See if any of the tools in this question allow you to access the SMART status to identity if any disk has got bad sectors.

Check the SMART status of the disks in the array and see if any one of them is failing/has failed. It is likely one of them has bad sectors that was being read during the copy which caused it to not respond to RAID software commands for a long time and caused the RAID array to fail.

comment Windows update: “Some update files aren't signed correctly.” How to find out which?
@magicandre1981 Not yet :( Been busy with other stuff, but I'll try it this weekend. Since my build got stuck on this version, I am beginning to like it as it does not suddenly restart itself to install a new OS. My only concern is with security updates ...

@magicandre1981 Nope... it sees the update but gives the same error when trying to download it. I'll probably grab the ISO and update that way.

@Ramhound Come on be more sympathetic. Being stuck in an unknown language UI is the most disabling experience ever. E.g. do you know which button to press on this Chinese keyboard to start the language pack install? cdn.sett.com/images/user/20131230/…

I get the argument in your example, but at that point I killed Firefox, it can at most request 500MB more memory before it runs out of process address space. However, the system was 1GB below the commit limit. (I've realised the commit graph has a scaling issue due to the limit nearly halved after FF was killed.)

Okay, this I don't get (even though all the evidences point to it). In my naive computer science-y understanding, the commit limit should be page-able RAM + page file. How could it not be able to use all the RAM? Any pointer to any reading I can do? Also, does not explain why the OS failed to expand the page file as it is set to system managed.

Based on experiences from places I've worked, even beefy workstations with fast SSDs have trouble with data files larger than 1GB....

Why create a sub-process and cat std-in to another cat? Have you tried exec | sed ... >> file?

Yes, it is 32 bit, but I can normally go up to 1.9GB of virtual memory use with no problem what so ever.

comment Testing 10G Ethernet with two NICs?
When you install the cards do make sure you use the slots that are connected to the CPU directly (not the south bridge) and make sure all offload options are turned on.

ProcessExplorer (from Microsoft) can do this as well. It even have a handy tree view.
