And there was the problem: the relevant line did have the $ at the beginning: export TODO_DIR=dirname "$/cygdrive/c/Users/Travis/todo/todo.txt". I changed that and it works now.

I think Cygwin is adding that somehow. In my .bashrc file I have: alias t="/cygdrive/c/users/Travis/todo/todo.sh", and the following produces the same error when executed from the shell: /cygdrive/c/users/travis/todo/todo.sh add "test"

Sadly, I don't think this will work for me, but good answer anyway. My laptop just has an integrated sound card and I can't find anything other than the usual Windows settings.

UPDATE: I just now tried booting from a Windows 7 install disc and running the repair tool, and it worked!! Thanks calavera.

I have now tried booting with the SSD both inside and outside of the laptop, but either way, I get the message about inserting a bootable disk.
