Can you update with the status of rc-status sysinit and rc-status boot?

And remove devfs from all of your runlevels. You don't need it.

comment Creating a ssh tunnel to transfer files?
You could also just run your local ssh to run scp on the bridge machine (give it the scp command to run), then run scp on the local machine, then wrap that all in a shell script. You could easily make one command out of it that way.

comment Is there a way to pause an already running scp process?
In a shell with job control you can just do Ctrl-Z to stop and fg to resume. It should work for short durations. But as the answer says, somewhere in the middle the connection state may be dropped after some time.

An intrinsic property of reducing the size is losing information. you cannot get it back again.

comment custom filesystem with fancy readdir or bash completion behaviour
Some things are better left in user space, such as ls -R, or find. How do you know someone else doesn't want to see only the directoryies?

comment Raid system fails to boot after moving from 2.6 kernel to 3.5
Did you also update the rest of your system? BTW, you would probably have better luck getting an answer on the gentoo-users mailing list.

comment How can I send a Ctrl+Alt+Delete through Remote Desktop in Windows 8?
The special thing about Ctl-Alt-Del is that it's intercepted by the BIOS (hardware) at the local machine. So you can't actually send that. You would have to use some other key combination and send some kind of "reset" command to the remote machine.

comment Does ls provide information about NFS permissions?
Unless you are accessing them as root user, where the server usually maps UID 0 to some other UID (called root squash).

Or not, that's why I ask for clarification.

Are you really running as root most of the time?
