comment How to create simple read/write login to specific folder on Linux server? (ftp/ssh/other..)
Do you need authenticated access, or will anonymous access work?

Did you actually try on the Linux VM: nslookup myhost @172.16.0.100?

comment Unable to install the linux kernel
Ok, but you'll need more than just the kernel there. At least libc (etc.) and a shell. Also, when you "make install" it installs into /boot. That's where the "real" kernel is. You want it in another location, with another runtime? BTW, I recommend using a virtual machine to do this.

Curious what is the reason for installing a vanilla kernel?

comment How to copy GRUB from a 64-bit system to USB drive usable for a 32-bit system?
I believe GRUB is 32 bit anyway. Try it and see...

comment screen: Must be connected to a terminal
Maybe you can try tmux? I'm not sure if it will work differently, but you can try it.

comment Clear terminal output of last command only
The terminal just displays a stream of text, and stores some in its own internal buffer. It has no way of knowing, or discriminating between command output. The rxvt-unicode terminal does have a perl interpreter that might be able to implement something like this. But as far as I know it's not done.

What does ls -l /dev/sdc* show?

comment Why do scripts beginning with an 'S' exist in /etc/rc.d/rc{0,6}.d?
@aaa90210 He simply asked if there would be a change in behavior if he changed a prefix from S to K. Without knowing exactly what script, or what the script does (which the OP doesn't say), it is impossible to give a more specific answer. Some halt scripts have backwards semantics.

@aaa90210 No, he wasn't.

comment Linux: mount and umount as a user without fstab
@MountainX Do you have, or do you use, an fstab file? If so, you might just try the user option there first.

comment Measuring firefox CPU usage on Linux
I'm seeing the same thing on my system. FF just spontaneously takes up 100% CPU for some time. then stops. then starts... I'm not sure what it's doing. PS. This is a question better suited for superuser.

This is not a question related to programming. Better to post on unix.stackexchange.com.

comment How to display a single terminal in two columns?
Nice idea. I don't know of any that does that currently. But in most a simple key combo (Shift-pgup) will quickly show the scrollback buffer.

comment How can I browse work machines (i.e. behind a firewall) from home?
I think if you "tell firefox" about a proxy it is expecting an HTTP proxy server. I don't think you have that. You probably want an SSH tunnel, and you might have to add a static route to home.

comment Linux doesn't boot on my Windows 7 laptop, even if successfully installed
interesting read: community.linuxmint.com/hardware/view/8273 some never nvidia chips are not well supported, esp. if you have the dual mode kind. Often adjusting BIOS settings can get it to work.

comment How can I automate commands that I run every day on Linux?
*nix is all about automation like this. ;) So sure, of course it's possible. A simple shell script is a start.
