Right on spot, thank you. Following your idea, I found on the dev forums of my provider exactly this reason for the filtering (dev.freebox.fr/bugs/task/9909 - in French)

No, this is a server which has a private address. The difference in behavior for that entry with mail (which is a CNAME to a public address) and ext (which is an A record pointing to a public address) are the heart of my question.

Interesting - I did the test again and this time it worked as designed (the room is booked and I am 'free'). Thanks for pushing me to try again :)

Thanks - I mentioned this solution in my question. The room then becomes 'free' as well and is visible as free (which is a problem if someone wants to book it) and for me (as the room is "bookable", i.e. someone's meeting in that room will not be rejected because the room is 'busy' (if this is the mechanism used by Exchange to decide whether a room is available or not,))

comment Why does Outlook play a sound upon new mail while this is disabled?
@MichaelKjörling: thanks for the suggestion, but no. I have this setting disabled for years (I am never interested to know that an email comes in - thus the "all disabled" settings) and out of a sudden it started to work today.
