@Ramhound Barring someone recognising the polling pattern, I think your suggestion is about the only way I'm going to resolve it. So yes I will be following your advice but hoping for a faster way to detect the cause of the issue. Otherwise it means i have to wait till the weekend as it's the kind of thing that is likely going to eat some (precious) time.

@Ramhound Pls see my update for some further info. This is definitely an explorer.exe problem that is only present in non-safe mode. Will keep on keeping on thx.

@DrMoishePippik Yes it is in peer to peer workgroup. I had thought of that and tried disconnecting from network both physically and logically but it doesn't appear to affect the problem. That said Im using a 2012 version of procmon so will upgrade and have another play.

@Ramhound If I boot into safe mode via msconfig.exe this does not happen. i.e. problem solved. So whats the easiest way to do a diff on safe mode vs normal mode these days? thx.

comment Pinning Folders To The Taskbar In Windows 8?
Though this doesn't seem to work if the shortcut was given a custom icon prior to pinning. It will work if you don't do this but then once pinned although you can change the icon using the shortcuts properties it wont update on the taskbar. So default only icons it seems.

comment How to convert a video file to XVID format?
@AngryHacker Yes you're right. I've just installed on another Win 8 image and it does have those, somewhat sneaky, opt out of optional installs, a bit like uTorrent. There are two of them that need to be radio checked to say no thanks. But that aside the program itself is not malware or up to anything improper. Been along while still i installed so forgot about that.

What do you mean, RDP would give the users more access than you would like? Create a new user account and assign it restricted permissions and then let them RDP with that login??

Have you gone to xvid.org and downloaded their free codec? Why on earth you would want to transcode to AVI using an XVid container from an MP4 which is likely using h264 codec where as XVid using h263. AVI are a total PITA to use re: video editing in that they are very often not supported.

comment What does it mean when my HDD doesn't show any S.M.A.R.T attributes?
Since you've installed a PSU, you've been in the system case, have you ensured you haven't nudged a SATA cable, etc. I.e start by rechecking all the physical connections. Are you using a Windows box? If so download crystaldiskinfo. If that checks out, then swap the power cable to another disk and see if that disk then starts acting up, if so it wont be your disk but the power cable / PSU. Anything in Event Viewer?
