comment remove spurious ending spaces when copy pasting from emacs console mode?
The experiment you describe gives me Does it work: true. Mac OS X 10.8.5, default emacs (22.1.1) without a single customization, iTerm2 2.0, bash 4.3.30.

comment why is vim calling this script on startup?
Is it still called "torte" or did you change it to "torte2"? Also, where is your vimrc?

Can you share your colorscheme and your vimrc? Is this this one? If so you should change let g:colors_name = "torte" to let g:colors_name = "torte2".

Yes, there's a very high chance of PEBKAC. You should add the output of $ lsof | grep -i vim to your question.

1. j and k are not for scrolling. 2. You can search the available addons directly from Firefox and Chrome themselves.

comment NERDTree: open file in current window?
NERDTree doesn't have the feature you ask for because it is specifically designed to not work that way. It is a side panel, not a generic file browser like netrw. The "NERDTree way" would be to 1. summon NERDTree, 2. open the file under the cursor in a new vsplit with s and have NERDTree close itself automatically with let NERDTreeQuitOnOpen = 1.

comment NERDTree: open file in current window?
The whole point of NERDTree is precisely to not work like netrw. If you want netrw use netrw.

comment Updating the emacs style Time Stamp comments in vim
Why would you put a timestamp in your file when your filesystem already saves the creation and modification dates and your VCS keeps even more information?

comment Strange backspace behavior
nocompatible is only set automatically when a user vimrc is found. Since you don't have one there is no reason to expect it to happen. Your settings are supposed to go in ~/.vimrc (and ~/.vim/vimrc if you use 7.4) and nowhere else.
