comment How can I add a comment for each flag, on separate lines, in a bash script?
while i kind of like this, because it's flexible and has flow and additional logic, i feel it puts work into coding when it could've just been commented with grace and style instead.

that's distracting and doesnt follow standard programming practices for comments, regardless of language. put the comment on its own line. because it inserts a comment by using code you should technically be commenting the additional code which is extra work that could have been avoided by investing in the comments instead.

comment How can I move folders that contain a file with a specific extension to a destination folder?
I was able to add duplicate removal by using the uniq command. since the results of the find all duplicate lines were adjacent so '''uniq''' worked for me.

I don't have Windows 7 yet, but Vista it did not save my folder settings until I disabled UAC. Do you have UAC enabled or disabled?

Ok, this still isn't what I want, however you were able to move me a little closer and perhaps can provide an intermediary step. The problem with your solution is it still is dealing with presenting output of a list of files. I instead want output of a list of folders that contain the file. With your example I'm able to use "dirname" to obtain a list of folders, but each folder is listed once for each file. There's tens of thousands of files and hundreds of folders. I just need the folders.

this hasn't really worked for me. it's very incomplete and it seems like i've been able to reproduce the same (incorrect) output without involving sed.

comment gVIM “put” driving me mad, how do I “put” at the beginning of a line
bad form, calculating... sheesh. human brain regularly only handles 7 to 10 concepts simultaneously, the consideration of keystrokes taken by one and then you want a calculation... involving 3 more numbers?! no way.

comment Is there a Unix-y tool for taking notes on the command line?
i think i like your answer the best, however it doesnt do everything. by using the tnotes command you can incorporate the note taking into a script. both versions have their ups and downs, but i think yours is the most bulletproof and doesnt rely on other programs. you seem to have really mastered screen and the command line and i think everyone can learn a lot by trying, exploring, and practicing. thanks for the encouragement and inspiration.

ryan, mind selecting one of these as a solution if you have been able to resolve this?

comment Change terminal colors when connecting to remote server, Linux
I upvoted this because it's a great technique and something I already do... in fact I use unique colors using the prompt command for each server... the prompts are the same, but the colors i type in and the base color is different for each of my servers. it's the easiest way of looking at a terminal withouth having to read anything (even a title bar or prompt) and KNOW FOR SURE, which server you're connected to.

That's correct, rsync works very well as a solution on Windows. From my understanding, in some cases, it does have a "quirk" (it has to be done a little differently than you would expect on Windows.

My work blocks based on text strings in the entire URL with HTTP variables even, so this doesnt work for me.

this wasnt really a solution/answer to your question (in fact delivering the opposite intended result) when you had already been provided a correct solution.

I have a C6180 and I configured my SSID and key from the console on the printer. It works great in Linux and in Windows Vista using the HP Driver only download. Make sure you follow up with the "Fix for disappearing printer icon" also available on hp's site.

comment What Gui would be suitable for my home Ubuntu Server?
I went ahead and voted this question up, but I think you should probably clarify a little more about the GUI... cuz it's really vague as avelldiroll pointed out.
