P.S. The picture is a Beta-prime distribution. It shows the program speedup factors you can get if you see a problem twice in 2, 3, 4, and 5 samples.

comment profiling file reading speed via /dev/null?
Threads can only make code faster if it can spread CPU-bound operations across multiple cores. If your code is reading a file from disk, how are threads supposed to make it faster?

Run a good anti-virus and/or anti-malware program.

comment What did computers use for output before monitors?
Punched cards, line printers, teletypes, paper tape, in 1962, when I first worked on them. There were some pretty amazing machines. like the line printer could print on multi-layer paper with carbon paper in between. Then it would be run through a burster-decollater to separate the copies.

It happens on these forums. You can expect to get zinged for no apparent reason, or if you're lucky, it could be because you said something interesting, thus controversial.

Yeah that works for those drives. On a bigger drive the platters were tough steel.

comment tool to record windows action?
I wrote one ages ago to use in testing software. Last time I tried it, it still worked, on XP. It just captures window event messages, writes them to a file, and then another app plays them back. I'm always a little nervous about tools like that, wondering if it could be used by the wrong people to collect passwords or whatever.
