comment Why can't graphics cards just have more memory?
Note that single/double precision only applies to vertices & normals, and the biggest memory hog on a gaming GPU today is likely the textures, rather than models. (Textures are probably stored in 16-bit float rather than 8-bit integer on the latest and greatest games though...)

Be sure to add to both all-users and the current user's startup folder. Then changing the permissions of these folders...

I'm not sure how much of win.ini and 'system.ini' is used in Windows7 (showing on my 64-bit version), but might be able to have some fun adding stuff there. Back in the Windows 3.x time, it was good fun. :)

@Phoshi: True. Also, I'm sure the linux kernel will support it eventually. ;)

@Phoshi: The people building gpu-cards, drivers and OS:es are pretty smart. ;)

@Mokubai: My thinking that since you can memory-map a >4GB file in 32-bit apps, just not the entire file, you should be able to get hold of small parts of the graphics memory (using glMapBuffer or some equivalent) and have the CPU's TLB map that to the right place. Since even 32-bit OS:es can use more than 4 GB RAM today (true fact), I think it's certainly possible to use more than 2-4GB VRAM.

This can surely be mapped about, even in a 32-bit OS. And 64-bit is very common these days. I doubt this. Also, each frame might not need the same textures, it depends if you're looking at the sky, the ground, or through the window into a house. That can change each frame, so you need much more textures than what you can use each frame.

comment What are the Windows A: and B: drives used for?
@Joe: Amiga had SD but used extra tracks to get 800 or 880K per disc (can't really remember). Anyway, much gloating was made towards PC-users... at least until they got HD-floppies. :)

Don't forget 8" floppies, 160K ftw!

comment Windows 7: Can I auto-start task manager?
I've always done this, and then I change window to minimized in the shortcut's property to put it in the system tray directly.

Yup. Using NVIDIA GTX 260 card. I'll update the driver and see if it helps.

That did not work. SpeedFan can't control fan speeds on the GTX480 (not even the latest beta).
