If you want to forcefully log off a user you might also run killall -9 -u $USER.

comment Why doesn't this spawn a root shell?
So, I didn't get it wrong, it's just that bash behaves in a special way to prevent this? Is there any other way to achieve my wanted scenario?

Thanks, but using grep enables me to find open files by only parts of its name.

comment Is there any disadvantage of vacuuming sqlite dbs?
Mail.app's "Envelope Index" sqlite3 db gets really large. This also impacts Mail.app's startup time.

comment OS X 10.6: sub-pixel antialiasing
Not necessarily! There can be a difference between the frame buffer and the screenshot rendering. And also, I understood you as if you asked about LCD subpixel antialiasing and that's what I tried to answer with that post. Beside all that, a photography of the monitor is as good as a screenshot. Actually it is more a screenshot than a screenshot is!?

When I get some spare time, I might recheck that and compare it to ClearType

comment Problem Uninstalling Microsoft Internet Explorer
There is NO difference of EU and US versions of Windows, except for the "N" versions, that do not contain Windows Media. All tricks to uninstall IE work by just hiding it and maybe deleting a few uncritical files.

"TrueCrypt uses AES with a 256-bit key". Therefore using more than 39 characters won't change anything.

comment Do I fry my device when attaching a 5V RS232 converter to a 3.3V port?
Paper doesn't blush. This might be the standard, but in real world, most current devices that have a "RS232" interface, speak "RS232" logically, but downscaled +-3.3V or +-5V. So it might no be entirely technically correct to speak of RS232, but it's common speak.
