comment Why does WMI Provider Host (WmiPrvSE.exe) keep spiking my CPU?
@Tom, I wasn't under that impression and I certainly didn't want to imply it. Yet I did feel the urge to recognize two excellent answers to the problem with a little more verbosity and differentiation than I could with the upvotes alone. :)

I liked nhinkles's answer a bit better - but this is great and helpful, too - but most of all, a tool like API monitor is something I've been starting to miss lately, so thanks and +1 for the tip-off.

+ 1 for a very thorough, amusing and not least helpful, albeit verbose ;) analysis of the problem. I salute you.

Before any serious answers can be made: Have you made changes to your system setup (drivers, new hardware, new a/v software, something like that) recently? I assume you get a "Windows did not shut down properly" at booting which gives you booting options - does it work with "Last known good configuration" or "safe mode")?

And ASIO drivers for low-latency sound card access, either provided by the sound card vendor (rare) or Asio4All: tippach.business.t-online.de/asio4all

Did you change how your hard disk controller acts in the BIOS settings? (Like from "IDE Mode" to "AHCI", "RAID", "SATA", something like that?)

comment Why does my computer hesitate to turn on?
Especiall if it's the fans turning up after the CMOS beep - modern motherboards usually perform a fan test at startup for the user to make sure they're all working.

comment Intel Ultimate-N mac address change
You're right, it's probably possible to spoof the address on Win7 too. (It's just not possible to do it permanently with Intel Wireless cards, and the closed-source Windows driver doesn't offer a spoofing option, as opposed to the open-source Intel one. The open-source thing is my interpretation, at least) I can't look into it right now, but I will later.

Just to be sure we're on the same page: Are we talking about batch files here, or is it something else?

You can use an adapter to hook a VGA-only display up to a DVI port. Maybe there was even one with your graphics card. However, you still need to hook up one of the screens to the DisplayPort, as far as I know. But those cables cost some 10 bucks or so.

Fair enough, it is puzzling.
