Is recursion actually a risk? I do alias ls='ls --color', and it doesn't recurse. Nor does 'alias rm='rm -i'

That was exactly it. dumpe2fs revealed reserved block count = 6 million, free block count = 2.5 million. Since this is a external storage drive, not an OS drive, and since the files written to it will generally be written as root (that's what Clonezilla does), I set the reserved blocks count to zero, so that df shows the proper output.
