I should add that there are 2 ram slots available and my current setup is 1 4GB stick. Memory is so cheap that maybe I'll just buy that extra 4GB stick. This is an interesting discussion!

I did try running Western Digital's Data Lifeguard tool. It detects bad sectors, and when I try to repair, I get the fantastic error message "Error detected while repairing bad sectors."
