comment What is the difference between i686 and x86_64?
(I still look back and dissatisfied with the completeness of the answer). The "x86" part (discussed above) refers to the chips instruction architecture. The "x86" architecture used to be called "Pentinum", and now things like "Core Duo", "i5" and "i7". AMD has it in things like "Opteron", "K7", "Athlon", etc. It's the "most common" architecture in all [nearly] all Windows Desktop/Server PCs. If it's not something like an ARM, MIPS, PowerPC, Sparc - or it's an Intel or AMD chip - 99.999% odds are it's an x86 machine.

I'll give you the credit. What I discovered was that I was actually using a "Global Catalog" server - which means more than one "tree" is in it - and thus more than one sAMAccountName can be in it. So I used the sAMAAccountName, with some more logic to make sure that from the domain name, I had the correct tree specified as the search base.

My question is a bit more basic: I am given user credentials "domain\username" and "password". I need to authenticate this user against the AD server, and then figure out what their DN is, so I can look up their attributes. Question is - from the "domain\username" string - how do I figure out what DN to use?

So - I just strip away the "domain" portion of the username?

I can't find that attribute/field anywhere in the directory.
