Adding net auto-discovery to legacy printer I feared that CUPS was necessary (can CUPS manage network printers?) but I don't fully understand why. My Laserjet accepts many formats; what exactly does Airprint need? I have a newer inkjet that doesn't require support from CUPs either; what does it have that my laserjet doesn't? |

Adding net auto-discovery to legacy printer I am not using CUPS since, as I said in the original post, the printer is connected directly to the network. I would like to use avahi-daemon on my router to advertise the service however I cannot determine how the options need to be set in the XML services file. In fact I have managed to get avahi-browse to list the printer but iOS still does not so something must be amiss in the aforementioned XML file. |

Why is my magnetic hard drive exceedingly slow? Yes, see my comment to your answer where I explain that the system usage indicated 100% "busy". |

Why is my magnetic hard drive exceedingly slow? I was reading the system information (the section at the very top in an invocation of "sudo atop") and not the per-process information to establish that disk utilization was 100%. I used the per-process information only to establish what application was causing it. |

Why is my magnetic hard drive exceedingly slow? I was using the output of atop which indicated 100% "busy" and had DSK=100% for dpkg. |

How do I pass a list of packages to aptitude and resolve conflicts? I ended up using apt-get since it didn't complain so I cannot reproduce the situation. For future, do you mean "cat foo.txt | xargs aptitude install; aptitude" would work? |

How do I extract Windows XPSP3 dlls so that I can run the system file checker? What CD should I use? I installed SP3 from the Internet originally. I downloaded the SP3 upgrade iso to try and use that when prompted but it doesn't work. |

How do I disable “scheduled scan” in Windows 7? The disk tab in resource monitor doesn't list any process and total disk usages less than 1 KB/sec in burst about every one second with a queue length of 10. Average CPU usage for the "System" process is around 25. |

Is there a built-in checksum utility on Windows 7? Thanks. Unfortunately being built-in was an essential requirement for me. |

Route-based VPN on Windows Thanks. Being unable to use domain names is problematic but maybe I will be lucky and my hosts will have static addresses. |
