Sr Applications Developer @ jp2code.net

Years ago, I left home and joined the United States Marine Corps where I was assigned the Military Occupational Specialty of Basic Metal Worker (MOS 1316). I loved building things as a welder, but could not see myself doing this until I reached age 65.

After my Honorable Discharge in the early 1990s, I used my G.I. Bill to go to school and received my Bachelor of Science Degree in Physics four years later.

Using a love of computers since I played on a Commodore 64 at 10 years old and two (2) C++ electives that I had taken in school, I began working in the computer programming field.

The recession following ENRON in 2001 left me working at a remedial job for a little over two years while I brushed up on my skills at a local community college in SQL and first learned what the new .NET Framework was all about.

I have had the pleasure of working as a Software Developer since 2003.

For a short while, I pulled in a little extra income by running a moonlighting business under the name Joe's Welding. Dangerous working conditions and non-paying customers prompted me to sell my mobile welding equipment about the time my son was born.

Today, I am exclusively a Software Developer. My language of choice is C#, and I enjoy working with databases.

Where I am not known by my code, I am known by my motorcycle: I am one of the few riders who loves the Harley-Davidson XR1200. Pictures of my modified XR are posted on websites around the world, and I go by the screen name JoeP on the XR1200 Owner's Group.

comment Windows 7 Media Player and Codecs
Update: I have been running the Haali Media Splitter only now for over two (2) years. There are very few files that it consistently will not play in Windows 7 Media Center (less than 1 in 1000), and these could be due to corrupt headers in the downloads. So, in my opinion, this HAL media splitter is all anyone really needs.

Got it. This is just to help me do some local file manipulation, so I promise not to use the Ampersand (&).

Quotes are wrong, but that did it. Thanks!

To prevent down time as much as possible, is there a way to get the HDD size on the Media PC without tearing it open first?

comment How to get Windows data from hard drive tinkered with by Linux?
I went right over to try that. Unfortunately, Windows wanted me to select the NTFS file system to recover, and it did not show any in the list. Crap.

comment How to get Windows data from hard drive tinkered with by Linux?
This is a large 500 GB drive. Is there some way to say, "Take the Linux note off and put it back to NTFS?" The Linux program never formatted anything. It did all of its damage in about 15 seconds.

Oh, and this drive does NOT show up in Windows Explorer, and I know just about NOTHING about Linux.

comment Access Control List ACL to Limit an Account
Thanks, Dave. I had to wait until a time when the family wasn't watching TV, but I think I got it! :) After granting Read/Execute, I had to DENY the ability to Delete.

The user is added and is explicitly blocked (see account named Users in original question), but it seems granting Read/Write to Everyone takes priority.

I can block everyone; however, if I do this, I have not found a way to grant permissions to my account on another PC. I am trying to give Everyone Read/Write access specifically so that I can manage files on our Home Theater PC while the family is using it.

I'm running Group Policy Management 6.0 from my PC (Win7) and I see the settings for the Desktop Wallpaper (Public GPO > Settings > User Configuration > Policies > Administrative Templates > Desktop/Desktop > Desktop Wallpaper), but this value appears to be ReadOnly. Does this value have to be changed from the Server?

Thanks! This may be what I'm after. I'm a good C# guy, but not so good at this system administrator stuff - hence why I'm the backup sysadmin here! Let me check into this, and if it works I'll mark as the answer.

comment Windows 7 Media Player and Codecs
@OGChuckLow: The question is how to get this to work in Windows 7 Media Player - not Media Player Classic. "Classic" doesn't support the remotes, TV tuners, and a wealth of other things. It is good, but inferior, it seems. They just don't have the money that Microsoft has.

Yeah, I'm concerned some prior codec install left it's crap installed on the PC. Nothing but K-Lite is listed in the Programs folder, though.

No, that did not work. Media Player Classic, which K-Lite installed, is able to play the AVI files so I know they are OK. Media Center and Media Player can not play these files.

Seems like I used K-Lite a while back and had good results with it. Let me give it another go.
