comment Set up Ubuntu server as router
@wowpatrick I think it would work to your advantage to make a whole new question since that's completely different than the question posted above. Try the Ubuntu Stack Exchange site: askubuntu.com

comment How can I recover my accidentally-deleted Windows 7 boot partition?
If no one puts the above comments in Answer form below I'm totally stealing it as per: meta.serverfault.com/a/1931/9770 =)

comment How to telnet to find all computer name in a network?
@KMC What you describe of McAfee's bahavior is the same thing that Zenmap can do. Something is preventing Zenmap from behaving correctly. Perhaps it's not being run under the proper credentials or a firewall is blocking it.

comment Remote Office IP Privacy on Personal Computer
@John You're correct: no matter what device you use, as long as the traffic passes through the router, there is the potential for the traffic to be reported to your employer. I don't know if they do, however it's possible. They would be able to see the hardware MAC address of the devices, and could take into account the difference between the work machine and a personal machine. However, all of this is speculation. Just assume that all traffic is monitored regardless of device. That's certainly the easier way to do it from your employer's perspective, so assume that's what they do.

Is XP booting on the USB drive or did you install it on a local hard drive from a USB drive?

comment Permanently delete files from a flash drive
Governments use shredders for data destruction. A hammer is a high velocity shredder. If someone needs to be told to break the chip and not just the plastic shell, they need more help than a Q/A site can give them. Also, no one mentioned governments until just now, so that's a bit of a goalpost shift.

comment Disallow this user from accessing my computer
@Eyla I completely understand your situation. For most of my professional career I've worked in the internal IT department of non-profits or as an external contractor. Many times I've had to make solutions using chewing gum and double-sided Scotch tape. Just be advised that those solutions nearly universally cause more loss in the long run and even the ruination of the organization (as doomsday as that sounds, it can happen and has happened). Sad to say, you cannot do exactly what you want using a no-cost solution.

@Rushino in that case you can safely ignore MikeyB and voretaq7's responses, unless you want to do this from a Linux live CD. =)

comment Stubborn APIPA Issue (possible IPv4 problem, IPv6 = okay?)
Things have been tainted now with the system restore. Always uninstall updates from the Programs and Features tool. System restore is a last ditch effort to get a system up so you can remove files and then drop a grenade.

comment KVM over IP solutions
@Peaches491 It has one Ethernet port and then a "cascade" port which is in essence a single port switch. This means that you don't need to Ethernet drops at the device location. For example, I'll place the Spider on a PC, the network cable from the wall goes into the Spider and then the PC's network cable goes into the Spider. Both Spider and PC have connectivity.

comment VPN to server, then access files on same server… and RDP to same server
The programs to use are simply Windows own firewall control panel as well as the routing and remote access admin tool that is probably what is managing the VPN.

comment VPN to server, then access files on same server… and RDP to same server
If the server's internal address is also the external address, then that probably means that the entire local network isn't RFC 1918 compliant, which isn't a huge problem... some networks are still that way... but it's still odd.
