comment Bash: Concatenating TAR balls
If you really wish to operate with concatenated archives the required parameter is --ignore-zeros according to (gnu.org/software/tar/manual/html_section/…)

comment Do ISPs charge for network header bytes as part of data usage?
IP is 20 bytes and TCP 20 bytes on top of that. TCP Connection takes 3 packets ( 120 bytes), close takes 4 (160 bytes). Every data TCP packet also has 40 byte header and 40 byte ACK packet. Correct me if I'm wrong. (Wikipedia TCP)

According to blogs.withalan.com/a-few-notes-on-windows-7-software-raid Home version would be able to Span/Concatenate.

comment New HDD causes general lockups (including mouse freezing!)
With addition to hardware problem with the drive it could also be low quality sata cable or hot plug/swap enclosure or some kind of firmware problem between the controller and the drive.

comment Partition is missing in /dev
Well, the partitions are mentioned in the dmesg. They somehow are in wrong places. Maybe this is a paste problem? Does fdisk show the sdc partitions? You should run some benchmarks on the sdc disk to make sure it works properly. This might be some kind of driver problem to the sdc.

Is this raid-1 meant to be from mdadm, from motherboard fakeraid (dmraid) or real raid controller? Do you see the partitions on /dev/sdc with fdisk /dev/sdc and p ? What about /dev/sda and /dev/sdb ? fakeraid devices are now under /dev/mapper/

comment if you were building a new house, would you install cat5 in all the rooms, or would you just use WiFi?
optic ports in switches cost a fortune. Transceivers are not that expensive but they need power and again a point of failure.
