comment Is it possible to create a RAID 1 array for ubuntu and install xp on a non-RAID part of the drive?
Because I was not sure if the on-board controller would be able to use drives partially, i.e. 2x900GB in RAID1 and 2x100GB in RAID0. I thought it can just get the whole drive. If you choose to go with the MB controller, just make sure it will let you know about drive failure.

Yes, it is possible but IMHO it is not the best solution. What type of RAID controller you will use - Intel Matrix on-board one (aka "fake RAID"), Ubuntu software RAID (via md) or you have dedicated controller?

comment Changing Home directory of a NIS user
No, because the user is NIS user and not present in client's /etc/passwd. Also, the other clients won't know about the change. You can change the user's home from the NIS server without moving it (skip the -m option in usermod). Then the clients will see the change and this specific machine will be able to access the new home, if it is local to it or exported via NFS.

comment Laptop doesn't boot up (not even to bios settings) and has corrupted partition table
Nobody mentioned power distribution issues. It is possible that the MB is fine but the PDU is gone bad. Nevertheless, it seems like you would have to send it for repair to the manufacturer.

comment Cannot format external drive as it could not be detected
"The fact that you got the message randomly to format the drive makes me think it's a controller problem as well - you should never be asked to format an already-formatted drive out of the blue." - Unless it was formatted and used on Linux/MacOS prior getting connected to Windows :)

comment Linux Mint is rebooting while screen is locked, how do I go about debugging/fixing it?
I am running Linux Mint Debian Edition with MATE. By default it uses Gnome Screensaver and never, ever had troubles with it. I even didn't know I had xscreensaver installed. What happens if you change your screensaver to the Gnome one?

comment How to notify Gnome users of system reboot/shutdown?
Thanks, Kamil! This looks interesting, but it isn't what I need as it does not notify logged in Gnome users of incoming shutdown. Any idea how I could achieve this?

comment Make Pentaho report for Ubuntu 11.04
You are updating your environment but your current session is unaware of those changes, thus using the old settings. Either use the export JAVA_HOME=/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk and export ANT_HOME=/usr/share/ant or log out and log back in.

comment Package temperature above threshold, cpu clock throttled
@drN - 94C is very high temperature for a CPU. I see your CPU fan is gone from your comment below. The best way to fix your problem is to buy new CPU fan. Those are not expensive or are much cheaper than the price you would pay for the whole machine (or even property damage if the machine catches fire, God forbid). Since I am not answering your proper question, I am putting this as a comment. Just spent $20 and forget about the whole thing :)
