comment How do I compile mercurial 1.5.2 on debian?
The "right place" was what I was missing. I unpacked the debian directory along with the orig sources instead of inside of it.

Thanks, that works. My reason is that I have a patch which I need and I really don't want to pollute my system with unknown packages at this time, so no "sid" for me (whatever that might be - it's my first contact with debian).

This isn't about programming but "how do I use software". But it's a grey area, I agree.

comment DNS cannot resolve a web site address
@Martin: I mentioned it because ping isn't reliable. There might a firewall in your way, for example.

comment Unhappy with performance of GBit Ethernet to Fiber converter
In short: yes. I need to connect more places and the space is very limited. In the volume where I can run a single CAT6, I can run 12 fibers.

And I could try with a different cable but I'm pretty sure the cable is good (it's fresh out of the box, no indication of strain and with the protective caps still installed).

Unfortunately, there are no diagnostics. These devices are KISS. I'm not aware that I have enabled Jumbo packets but I'll check.

comment How to link a directory in Ubuntu to a directory in Windows 7?
That works only if the Windows partition is mounted under Linux. Use the command "mount" (no arguments) to see if and where it is mounted.

And don't forget to unplug it from any kind of network until you could install a firewall and the most important security fixes!

Interesting story but the story part belongs in your blog and the question belongs on superuser.com :-)

comment How can I set the idle timer for a disk connected to a 3ware RAID controller?
It says "drive state is: unknown". -i/-I also give errors. I can test the drive with -t but that probably doesn't use any low-level commands.

comment How can I make Windows XP use more than 2.5GB of RAM?
Okay, I checked the memory map. The device manager says that I have 3.3GB RAM available which means 0.8GB are missing. Any ideas?

Is there a tool to list how much RAM is still left after all the drivers and other things have taken their toll?

He wanted to run x86 code on a PPC and that's what bochs can do. Bochs itself isn't very fast but that doesn't mean all emulators are slow. For example, Amithlon could run Amiga code faster on a standard PC than any Amiga you could build. So it's more a question "How fast is your emulator" vs. "How fast is the original system" plus "How badly you need the application". If your life depends on running the app, speed is not the main issue. In this case, even a very slow emulator is better than nothing.
