comment Why does my USB hard drive stop reponding occasionally?
I added item 5 in case the problem is due to USB power overload.

Yes it's possible. I added stderr to the example.

comment How do I switch to a higher resolution in Centos 6 installed on a virtual machine (VirtualBox)?
One of the recent versions of xorg eliminated the need for xorg.conf. You only need xorg.conf now if the default settings guessed by xorg are not to your liking.

comment Causes of graphical artifacts / memory issues
That temperature seems pretty good so heat is probably not a problem. However make sure you measure the temp while it's actively artifacting, not when idle, as the temp can vary widely. I had a card once that would artifact when it got to around 90C or so. The next thing I can think of is to update your video driver, but I'm not so sure that will have an effect.

As noted above, Microsoft did not remove it on XP. You'll have to remove the certificates manually.

Have you tried reinstalling your graphics card driver?

comment Getting this simple regular expression to match in grep
I don't know why it works with single quotes and not with double quotes, but it works fine either way if you use bash shell instead of cmd.exe. I've seen enough weird issues with quoting and spacing in cmd.exe that I avoid it and use cygwin bash whenever possible.

comment Laptop goes into hibernate when it is suspended (only happens on Wednesdays)
Windows Update will update Defender much more frequently than Patch Tuesday, so it still could be Windows Update causing this. Try disabling automatic updates for awhile to see if it continues.

comment Adobe Flash Player causes my computer to crash
One more thing to try is to install Google Chrome and run your Flash in Chrome. It has its own built-in version of Flash Player. If you're already using Chrome, try IE or Firefox which will use the version of Flash Player you installed separately.

A few other things to try: Update the motherboard BIOS to the latest version. Look inside the case and make sure every connector is securely fastened and every add-on card such as the graphics card is secure in its slot. You also might try installing Speedfan (almico.com/speedfan.php) or some other temperature monitoring utility and watch the CPU temperature to see if the CPU is overheating.

comment Computer only works on its side
50-60C is fine. The system will automatically shut off, as you experienced, somewhere around 90C or so. 127C (all one-bits set in an 8 bit integer) indicates there is nothing connected to that particular temperature sensor. Nothing to worry about. Looks like everything is back to normal!

comment EXIF DateTimeOriginal format - disable seconds recording
The EXIF date/time fields use ISO standard date strings, which require the seconds field as far as I know. If you were to figure out a way toactually remove the seconds field, it may cause problems for other programs that try to parse it. You could certainly try using Exiftool to write the timestamp without the seconds field. I suspect it will either complain or it will set seconds to zero.

comment Why is windows constantly reading my harddisk?
A restore point may have been created if some third party app decided to run its own auto updater: Adobe, Java, etc., although usually you would have to intervene to give it permission to install via UAC.

comment Computer turns off 20-30 seconds into the boot process
Was it working previously and just started to do this, or is it a new build? If it worked until recently, what changed? If it's a new build, as KCotreau says make sure all the power connections are seated properly, especially the graphics card - some modern graphics cards require two power connections, check both. Does your PSU have enough watts for the graphics card?

comment Adobe Flash Player causes my computer to crash
System lockups often are caused by misbehaved drivers, and video drivers often are the culprit since they're so complex. You might also check audio drivers to be sure they're up to date. If this is a computer you built yourself, check the motherboard manufacturer's website for updated drivers.

comment extending xorg.conf to account for a boot from virtual box
That's all you should need to do in /etc/init.d. But if that's not working, edit /etc/rc.local and call your script from there.
