comment Easiest setup for someone new to Virtual Machines?
I think the easiest setup is to use Windows 7 on host machine and Windows XP on the virtual (guest) machine. Server 2008 is nice, very tweakable system, but costs a lot and somewhat awkward to use if you never used it before.

comment How to remove URL embedded in PDF document? (dialog “the document is trying to connect to” appears)
Sounds simple enough. If it does not screw up the formatting/image compression/fonts etc, then maybe the simplest method.

I usually keep around 3-5 virtual machines (to test software on different OSes) running on my desktop - but it has 6 cores and 32 gb of RAM :) But they compete for hard disk like crazy, even RAID0 does not help much...

@therobyouknow "URL call command would still be in there" - if you read my answer more carefully, you'll see that the URL call command will be removed too. I'll clarify this, thanks.

The program is free. You can install any trial version of Windows as long as you're learning, but then you'll probably have to buy another windows license.

You can even create "patch" PDFs that add, edit or remove (!) places of original PDF when appended to end of the file (Designed for tape drives too, yay). This format is really horrible.

PDF files are text (allowing embedding of binary streams and encryption, though), and they tolerate quite an amount of garbage. They even support comments, but I don't want to look thru entire 1000+ page spec as of now.

It's a text file format :) Also, you can remove the offset table altogether - and then the offending object, but I can't quite recall how do to it by hand correctly.

Yes. Both on LCD and CRT. Note that there are "red & blue" and "red & green" anaglyphs, but this could usually be corrected with monitor color tweaking
