comment Replacing local home server with VPS: Suggestions?
Have you considered using Amazon's S3 service. The vast majority of VPSes are setup to ensure data can be quickly moved around, and not for backup / bulk storage. You might want to combine it with a smaller windows vps to tinker with, and ensure data is being backed up. Also you might want to look into a "seed box", but again, I am not sure if that is exactly what you are looking for.

comment How to resume disconnected SSH X11-forwarded applications?
I would read over the installation document. However it appears that the columbia ftp is down, so I am not sure how to grab the package. It appears that you can grab the package here

I am not sure if they added this feature since 2007, but see the above images for what I was thinking about, and see if that helps.

comment Can I use my Ubuntu-computer as a second screen for my OS X-computer via Wi-fi?
You may be able to speed it up by using some of the other encoding options, but vnc is slow in general as that it is pumping binary pictures of the screen rather than some ascii representation of what is happening underneath. You might want to take a look at NoMachine NX to see if that is faster.

You can also check to see if there is any interesting warning/notes when you run ssh -vvvv -X -i ...

comment OSX 10.6.6 SSH md5 break-in check
Running codesign -d -vv on both the laptop and another 10.6.6 machine returns the same values for each of the lines. Also MD5 (/sbin/md5) = 94dd237389823d38fc4183113099fb5a for both of the machines. Finally, shasum is the same for both machines.
