comment Increase the maximum number of open file descriptors in Snow Leopard?
Running echo limit maxfiles 10000 10000|sudo tee -a /etc/launchd.conf and restarting works for me in Mavericks.

comment Why does iterm2 toggle font rendering with every other boot
The second screenshot looks like LCD font smoothing (subpixel rendering) is turned off. You could try to quit iTerm and run defaults write com.googlecode.iterm2 AppleFontSmoothing -int 2 in Terminal, but it won't probably help.

You could also look at what EventViewer (/Applications/KeyRemap4MacBook.app/Contents/Applications/EventViewer.app) shows when you press shift-9.

comment Request help/advice with my automator/applescript service
The script just terminates Automator Launcher in a really noob way. You could replace it with just killall Automator\ Launcher.

comment OS X Automator Shell Script for custom search with special character not encoded with utf-8
No, tr -d \\n is meant to remove linefeeds from the output of xxd -p (which prints 60 characters per line). You can use printf %s "$(cat)" to remove a linefeed from the end of the input. Or replace echo with printf %s.

comment Is there an app or script that will extract .rar files for Mac OS X?
I use the old non-sandboxed version of The Unarchiver from unarchiver.c3.cx/unarchiver. The App Store version shows an authorization dialog every time you extract files to a folder you haven't extracted files to before. I use unar (which is a command line version of The Unarchiver) in shells.

comment How to make a custom keyboard layout in MacOS?
You can also add an icon for an XML keylayout file by for example saving the icns file as /Library/Keyboard Layouts/My Keyboard Layout.icns.

Does codesign -vv /Applications/Google\ Chrome.app/ print something like valid on disk or are there some errors? If there are errors, try to download a new copy of Chrome.

I think it's easier to just use command-H, but I edited the answer.

comment Passing paths with spaces as arguments in OS X
You can use "$keyLocation" instead of $"$keyLocation". $"" is used for strings that undergo translation depending on the locale. See gnu.org/software/bash/manual/bash.html#Locale-Translation.

What is your PS1 set to? Are the non-printing characters surrounded by \[ and \]? Can you edit the answer to include other relevant parts of configuration files like ~/.bash_profile or ~/.inputrc?

OS X's ps doesn't have --no-headers, but you can use ps -p 15115 -o user=.

comment Turn off snippets in mavericks
Many applications like Safari and TextEdit have that option in the menu bar. For example Chrome doesn't have that option, but it also doesn't support text replacement.

comment Custom keyboard layout in sandboxed app?
Try moving the keyboard layout to /Library/Keyboard Layouts/ and restarting. Keyboard layouts in the user library can't be selected in password dialogs or on the login window.

comment MacBook Pro Retina and fonts rendering
defaults write -g AppleFontSmoothing -int 1 doesn't disable LCD font smoothing, but it makes OS X use the light text rendering setting that was included in System Preferences in 10.5 and earlier. defaults write -g AppleFontSmoothing -int 0 would disable LCD font smoothing, like the "Standard - Best for CRT" setting in 10.5 and earlier or unchecking "Use LCD font smoothing when available" in 10.6 and later.

comment Installing OS X Mavericks to OS X Show Leopard 10.6.8
You could just try downloading the installer again from App Store. It took me about 5 attempts to complete the download with a 4G Internet connection.
