Paranoid pragmatic security type; I helped develop the AppArmor mandatory access control system. If AppArmor isn't a good fit for your security requirements, please consider running TOMOYO, SMACK, or SELinux.

For more information about me, including an abridged book list, see my careers2.0 profile. Or if you're old-school and want to see all my LaTeX skills on display, my old-fashioned resume is also available.

@DeCaf, probably simple VMWare configuration questions are better on Super User than Server Fault.

That is a crazy-old version of gcc. Just where did you find this server? Makes me wonder just how many known security vulnerabilities are on a machine this ancient...

comment Determine Linux distribution
That reports the kernel version string, which could be very wrong if your host is running a kernel from a different distribution -- either on bare metal or because of a tool like OpenVZ or VServers.

@Ares, what does it mean to "put" a folder or file? Give commands and ls -l output.

If I had to design an LCD test, that sounds like the perfect description. I'm going to guess dead video card on the machine. Plug in an external monitor and report back -- the folks on Super User will probably want to know the results. Maybe iFixit has pre-written guides for your problem?

Is it set to a 95% zoom level? I've seen horribly ugly fonts result from zoom settings before.

@urbanelementz, if this post did not solve your problem, you should not have checked the check mark to Accept the answer. (Sorry scurker. :) Because it is marked solved, you're going to get a lot fewer people looking at your question. For more details, see our little guide on accepting answers.

@Nobody, indeed, but "switch to another account" is a bit vague. :) How would you switch to another account? That's the thrust of the question. :)
