comment Why does my screen dim on a desktop installation of Windows 7?
I know it wasn't monitor related because the Windows cursor was still bright white while everything else goes dim.

The other answers are all awesome. I learned a lot, thank you. But, for my specific purposes, this is what I was looking for. Accepted.

Thinking back, I was using an ATI All-in-Wonder card. Now on a different system with a different video card, this never happens. I accepted this answer because the best theory on a "solution" seems to lie somewhere in the video settings.

... and, yes, this is a duplicate question from this (superuser.com/questions/114360). It is best to avoid spreading answers across duplicate questions. Please put your answers there and vote to close.

Not a silly question at all. Probably one of the top questions from people starting out in virtualization.

This site is for questions about computer hardware or software. Questions about specific web sites are not really appropriate for this site. They are better asked on their support forum. See the faq (superuser.com/faq). "… and it is not about … websites or web services like Facebook, Twitter, and WordPress"

comment How powerful of a PC do you need to edit HD videos?
It's not really that ugly, if there is no other way to get your original files in an intermediate format. MPEG is a delivery format and not really suitable for editing. Try converting it to a uncompressed AVI so you don't have any further degradation from the compression and see if that edits better. Do all your editing and convert it back to whatever format you need for publishing as the last step.

@BBlake - Sony Vegas does not use the video card (GPU) to do rendering. It's all CPU. If the NLE isn't designed specifically to use the GPU (Sony Vegas isn't), the author would be throwing away their money. See: sonycreativesoftware.com/forums/… . I don't know whether Premiere supports the GPU-enabled playback codec.

comment Do high-end graphics cards raise your electricity bill by much?
A computer with a 450W PSU will never draw 450 Watts of continuous power. PSU requirements are to cover the maximum peak power requirements during start up. Continuous (and typical use) power consumption is much less.

comment MileWideBack (Firefox extension) and Windows 7
After upgrading, Firefox 3.6 said that this extension was not compatible, so it was disabled. With the changes listed in the "accepted" answer, the add-on is running just fine.

@Dt7 - This is a duplicate of the question linked below. I had the same exact problem and got a fix here. Check it out - Can you force Firefox to let a “not compatible” plug-in run? MileWideBack - superuser.com/questions/99619/…

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Picasa2 (?), if memory serves. I don't have Picasa installed at the moment. I just reinstalled my OS.

I would say no. You just need to remove or clear the database-related files. Like a fresh install.

comment Safe to remove XP from a computer running Windows 7?
Yes. It is becoming increasing rare for a programmer to make the mistake of hard-coding the assumption of a C-Drive.

comment Looking for blog platform to write something about developement
For future reference, this isn't really a "programming question" and would be better asked on superuser.com . The folks there are pretty helpful and that site is a bit more on-topic with what you are asking.

You've asked a fair number of questions on this site. Can you go back through those questions and "accept" the answers you found most useful? It's a good way to recognize/reward those who have helped you. meta.stackexchange.com/questions/8396/…

I would have advised the original author to swap the drives and install Windows 7 on the C-Drive from the get-go.

+1 Accepted: While the add-ons linked by the other users are cool, it's nice to have a native solution. Thanks.

comment Windows backup: user-friendly incremental disk imaging?
You can do this with Acronis (see my answer below). Schedule regular, automatic backups. "If a planned task fails because the external drive was not available when the task started the backup will automatically start once the drive is reconnected."

comment Defragment a file or folder? Windows 7
@rlb.usa - A disk defragmentation from within the virtual machine will not do the same thing. The virtual image is a single file (or multiple) on the physical disk. Defragging from within the virtual machine will only rearrange the virtual files within the image. If that physical image file is scattered across the physical disk, defragging from the host OS will arrange the file's fragments so they are stored contiguously on the disk, increasing performance.
