comment Greasy water in laptop's DIMM slot
Maybe a small amount of isopropyl alcohol mixed with lots of distilled water? (disclaimer: never tried this on a real laptop, but I did bathe a motherboard in distilled water at one point and it worked for years afterwards).

And don't drop any screws on it while it's running!

comment How can I limit bandwidth of other programs?
And how exactly is a router supposed to know which process originates the traffic?

comment How can I limit bandwidth of other programs?
@GSerg dropping packets is just about the only way to "transparently narrow the bandwidth". (not that this helps fix any issues you're having on XP, of course...)

comment How can I configure the Windows 7 firewall to prompt me on outbound traffic?
Upon installation, you have to sit through a few dozen "allow this program?" prompts before you can access any settings.

revised What's the reason behind “Stereo Mix” becoming a missing option?
Added Audacity as top option since it's open-source and widely known. Hope it's ok. I'm not affiliated; I just couldn't believe I spent hours searching for software to do this when I had one that works already installed!

comment How to copy a file to a directory in DOS, and create directories if necessary?
xcopy is fine if you don't need to also rename your file. If you do, unfortunately xcopy will ask you whether the destination is a directory or a filename and there is no command-line switch to specify "it's a file".

Which only works if there is no file.txt.bak in the directory, of course. Still, this might work in some scenarios.

comment Windows equivalent of the Linux command 'touch'?
As almost every unix-to-windows port ever, this fails to work with unicode characters in the filenames outside of the encoding set as the default for non-unicode programs. Test filename that will trip up every such tool: "test тест τεστ.txt"

comment What's the keyboard shortcut to open the “new menu” (PanelUI) in Firefox 29?
@Raystafarian I wouldn't trust that page too much; it lists for example Ctrl+/ for the now-removed addon bar, and their page for mouse shortcuts even lists Alt+Click that hasn't worked for years!

comment How to remove Encrypted flag when copying a file from a HDD to a USB drive?
True, using FAT (or exFAT) on the USB drive is a bit crude, but it appears to be the only truly automatic approach currently available.

comment Static or Dynamic Local IP based on Physical Location
Not an answer to your question, but I found it easier to set up DHCP on your home router, so that you can use dynamic IP allocation everywhere. I'd recommend this as the first choice.
