comment Why are there so many pins on a SATA power connector?
They should have given us two power connectors: one for a limited current 5V and 12V (total of 4 pins, with a separate ground for each), and a separate one for all the server/enterprise extras like 3v3, staggered spin-up, more current, etc. 99.9% of all HDDs would come with a tiny 4 pin power connector only and nothing else. Alas.

comment What do you do when you need whole-words search in Firefox?
@DCShannon I'm afraid not, no. The work happening in Bug 269442 briefly raised my hopes, but nothing usable yet.

comment Why does emptying disk space speed up computers?
This does not happen: "so when the drive is held up for an extended time looking for a free location to write to, it can't read any data to you" – it just doesn't. That's not how filesystems work. Please edit your answer to stop spreading misinformation.

comment Prevent “document expired” message and just show the expired page?
This is it! The setting is under Tools / Options / Advanced / Network / Override automatic cache management. Not sure if it works for all cases of "Document Expired", but it worked for the one I had, where I was unable to View Source of a POST response.

comment Where can I download Windows 8 legally, from Microsoft?
There's a better way now, one that doesn't require any product keys (but still requires one to run an EXE on a Windows machine for whatever reason): the Media Creation Tool described in this answer.

Great for those already on Windows, impossible for those who are not. They know how to make it difficult, don't they...

comment How to find source process of unknown popup in Windows 7
Process Hacker can do this too, and is much more actively maintained. It has every feature of Process Explorer that I know of and then some (speaking as a long term Process Explorer user frustrated with lack of progress).

Did not work on IE11 / Win7; the prompt still appears.

comment How do I get a special character without a number pad?
Or use the Microsoft Keyboard Layout Creator (free) to make the perfect layout. It's surprisingly easy. I'd say easier than getting used to the dead keys in the US International layout.

@David: Welcome to the world of using Unix things on Windows, or Windows things on Unix, or any other cross-ecosystem things :)

comment How to delete Windows NTFS hard link (mklink /h) while original is in use?
The "why" is incomplete; if deleting a hardlink is a modification, then so is adding one, yet you can add hardlinks to open files, just not delete or rename them. I think the "why" is just that it was decided that hardlinks can't be renamed or deleted while a file is open; an intentional design decision.

comment Windows task scheduler won't run file on non-system drive
If svcAccount is in the Administrators group, then just ticking the "Run with highest privileges" checkbox should enable it to access the path via its Administrator membership.

comment How can I wipe a broken hard disk drive before sending it back to the manufacturer for maintenance?
The problem with encrypting your drive is that it's not exactly convenient to have to enter a passphrase every time you boot, especially if the machine is often unattended in a secure enough building. As of today there are no HDD encryption programs which don't require a password, unfortunately, as the only use case for that is basically this: secure warranty returns.

The simplest fix by far. Hope there are no side-effects.

It's impossible to tell from the second screenshot how to find this setting; it's here: Computer Configuration\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Public Key Policies.

comment How do I permanently disable javascript strict warnings in Firefox?
devtools.errorconsole.deprecation_warnings doesn't remove all the warnings. In particular, it doesn't remove the one caused by AdBlock.

comment How can I control the audio volume of a Modern-UI application?
Great. Try skyping while using a game. You'd better hope that the game has its own volume control. Simplify as far as you can BUT NO FURTHER, and they certainly went overboard, completely killing the super-awesome feature of adjusting the relative volume of two apps.

comment Clear 301-redirect cache in Firefox
Nice! Unlike my solution, this works even if your only visit to the site is a redirect to an error page, because those don't appear in the history and you have nothing to click "Forget about this site" on.

comment My PC is not a phone - how do I remove the swipey pre-log in screen from Gnome 3?
Terrible discoverability, acceptable usability. A good example of the difference between the two!
