comment opening files directly from Google Chrome
Google Chrome Settings/Advanced/Downloads Clear Auto-Opening Settings button. But, this will clear ALL the settings. If you have set other file types to open automatically you will have to reconfigure them.

comment Can't copy laptop display to hdtv only extended second monitor
Try closing starting the show then closing the lid to the laptop. That will force it to the external monitor only. Or, you can just start watching and drag it to the second screen and maximize there. I used to do that all the time so I could watch and surf at the same time.

Have you tried adjusting your ClearType settings? Is your monitor an LCD or a CRT?

comment How to detect Bittorrent traffic? Ideally with automatic notification
You might have some options via your router. Check to see what methods of blocking it supports.

comment ASUS UX31A Keyboard Backlight Turns Off After Lid is Closed and Reopened
Glad we figured it out! I'm also using the Smart Gesture - it works better for me than the Elantech driver.

What touchpad driver are you using? Windows, Elantech or ASUS Smart Gesture? If you haven't installed anything you should download one from the support page. I'm happy with the Smart Gesture but some swear by the Elantech. Check your installed apps to see if ATK Package is installed. I'm pretty sure you need that for the FN keys to work. But, I have no experience with W8.

I wonder if that has anything to do with ATK. Perhaps the backlight got turned off somehow and W8 isn't letting it turn back on. Do your other FN + keys work?

Do you have the latest BIOS? Also, do you have it set to for auto backlight? I think it is FN+a key to enable and disable the auto backlight level. It might be something with W8 that might be causing your issues - did you have it with W7?

comment Trouble getting external monitor to connect to laptop
I have no clue but you might be able to resolve the resolution mismatch by adjusting the video card resolution to a supported setting.

comment Trouble getting external monitor to connect to laptop
NO just trying to get it back to working on the external monitor. If you can manage to get it to show you anything you should then be able to adjust the settings to make the screen work consistently.

comment How do I combine data from multiple rows in excel to one cell?
Pretty sure there's a limit to the number of characters per cell in Excel. I can safely say what you are trying to do will exceed that limit. You can try to export it to a CSV file and edit that with Notepad++ to achieve your desired result but I doubt excel will import that into one cell.

comment Automated/scripted incremental backups on Windows
I have an HP MediaSmart Home Server. Once you run the connector software from a device it will automatically set it up for backups. It is possible to configure the backups to not backup some files or directories but the default is to do an entire system backup. It also let's you set how many backups to keep. The best part was the four bays in the unit that allow you to add space but keep all the storage as one contiguous logical drive. This feature has be lost in the newer versions of Windows server. HP has stopped making home servers. Not sure if you can even get one anymore.

Many computers will move the screen to the external monitor automatically when you close the lid. You might give that a try.

comment 802.11n/a (5GHz only) access point not visible to my laptop
I believe it is only n that is broadcast on the 5ghz band for routers that support that function. Your issue is that your wireless card doesn't support the 5ghz protocol. You can buy wireless micro dongles that do if you really want to use the 5ghz band.

comment How to change Windows 7 window border size thinner than 1?
You have to go into the Personalization menu. Window Color. Advanced appearence settings. This will pop up a new window. Select Border padding from the drop down box and change it to 0.

You can actually set the border padding down to 0. I'm not sure how much smaller 0 is compared to 1 but that's the first thing I change whenever I get a new system.

comment Logitech unifying receiver
I have several of the unifying devices but only one has more than one device attached. The best part of these devices, IMO, is that they can be replaced separately - you can purchase only the dongle should it fail or be broken. In the past you had to replace the entire set (both dongle and mouse) should one fail. Additionally, the micro-dongle size makes it much less likely to be broken. I have used Logitech for years because they have the best products and offer excellent warranties.

comment Does Torrent traffic to NAS go through my laptop?
I have looked into the dd-wrt but I'm not interested in modifying my router. It works exactly the way I want it to without doing that. I just wanted to get around it having to come to my machine then to the NAS. I decided to buy an NAS with a built in torrent client.
