comment Need clarification on what IDE hard drive size—2.5 inch versus 3.5 inch—actually means
Yes, but they were still called 3.5" discs, so that's what the corresponding drives were called.

For 5.25" and 3.5" drives, the number actually refers to the size of the floppy disc that would fit in a drive of that size. That's why a 3.5" drive is really 4" wide; the drive has to be a bit wider than the floppy. Newer (smaller) drive sizes may refer to the maximum platter size possible.

comment Which considerations for deciding between 32bit and 64bit Linux distro on an old computer?
@MichaelBurr, no, the x32 ABI is a brand-new ABI that keeps the CPU in 64-bit mode (so you have access to new instructions & new registers) but uses 32-bit pointers (so you can only address 4GB of memory). Details are at the web site I linked to. When you install 32-bit libraries & apps on x64, they're still using the x86 ABI, and the CPU runs in 32-bit mode while they're using it.

The x32 ABI was designed specifically to address the pointer-size issue for apps that don't need more than a couple GB of memory, but it hasn't become popular yet.

@Jules, on some distros, /etc/mtab is actually a symlink to /proc/mounts.

comment How can I prepend a line number and tab to each line of a text file?
Actually, you can tell nl to omit the space before the number. Just use the -w1 option to tell it the minimum width for a number is 1.

Try M-x toggle-debug-on-error (or checking "Enter Debugger on Error" in the Options menu) first. Also, what does C-h v temporary-file-directory report?
